RESEARCH
- Dr. Jan Prins is also the director of the Aquatic Research Laboratory at the University of Hawaii. Located adjacent to the pool, the laboratory focuses on the biomechanical analyses of swimming and aquatic rehabilitation.
- One of our current research projects, titled A Longitudinal Study of Swimming Skill Acquisition in Children, is unique, insofar that it is an ongoing study that is examining the changes in swimming stroke technique of children and adolescents, as they continue to improve their swimming skills over an extended period of time.
- All the swimmers in our Super Swim classes at Swim Hawaii participate in the study, which involves periodic underwater video taping with subsequent analyses. The data, collected over the last 2 years of data is currently being prepared for publication and has been presented at international conferences.
- Here is a list of our recent publications. Many of these are available for you to download. We hope they increase your understanding of swimming technique.

Frontal view of swimmer with light-emitting diodes (LED’s) attached to joint segments … part of an on-going study using multiple high-speed cameras studying the underwater biomechanics of elite swimmers.
Lateral View of Freestyle with video enhancements used to track the paths of the hand and elbow in real-time. Video enhancements can dramatically improve understanding of swimming stroke-mechanics.
